SAINT JOHN, NB: The results of the feedback forms and comments from the Rockwood Park public workshop and open houses have been tallied. Of the three trail alternatives displayed at the October 29 and 30, 2007 open houses, the Lily Lake Trail alternative has been chosen. The decision has the support of the Rockwood Park Construction and Restoration Consultative Planning Committee, the Saint John Horticultural Association and the City of Saint John.
“Brunswick Pipeline’s original commitment was to build a walking/bicycle trail on top of the pipeline right-of-way (RoW), however, there was only marginal support to choose this alternative. Instead we have considered the comments made at October’s public events, the trail usage numbers the feedback forms provided, and the considerable investment already made in reconstruction of the Lily Lake Pavilion to make our decision,” said Mike MacIntyre, Co-Chair of the Committee and General Manager for Brunswick Pipeline.
The Lily Lake Trail will also complement the Horticultural Association and City’s plans to renew the Lily Lake entrance to Rockwood Park.
“It is an exciting decision,” said Ian Stead, President of the Saint John Horticultural Association and 2nd Co-Chair of the Rockwood Park Committee. “It is a perfect tie-in to our own renewal project. Seeing the public support that Brunswick Pipeline has received for this alternative makes the choice even better.”
The $450,000 that Brunswick Pipeline would have spent on the original trail commitment will be spent on renewal of the north-west section of existing trail, including installation of measures to avoid the steep hill in that corner. Detailed planning is underway and an application for the necessary provincial permit has been filed. Construction is expected to being in late February or early March.
