Brunswick Pipeline to hold mock emergency exercise

Brunswick Pipeline and the Saint John Emergency Management Organization (SJEMO) will conduct a mock emergency exercise on Dedication Street on Thursday, June 11, 2009 between 10 a.m. and noon. Saint John Fire Department and Saint John Police Force vehicles will be noticeable in the Grandview Industrial Park and Dedication Street areas, with lights and possibly sirens activated.  At the exercise site, Brunswick Pipeline will use a loader to denote the area of the fictitious pipeline break.  Access to a portion of the area will be barricaded to simulate a real event.

One of Brunswick Pipeline’s conditions of approval was to hold a mock emergency exercise within 6 months of operation of the natural gas pipeline.  While gas is not flowing, it was introduced into the pipeline in February.  Accordingly, the exercise is being held this month.   National Energy Board staff will be on hand to observe and comment on the exercise, as will observers from the NB Emergency Management Organization and staff from the federal Department of Public Safety.  The Deputy Fire Marshal from the Saint John office of the Provincial Fire Marshal will also participate.

Key goals for the exercise are to test our Emergency Response Plan procedures and radio and other site communications systems; to provide situation specific emergency response practice including coordination with other agencies; to provide SJEMO and municipal agencies additional natural gas pipeline experience.

Notices have been provided to residents and businesses within 900 metres of the exercise site, as well as those in the south-east portion of Champlain Heights.  Brunswick Pipeline does not expect to cause disruption of roadways, but we apologize in advance in case of any inconvenience.
