Saint John, NB: On January 31, 2009, the Brunswick Pipeline was declared mechanically complete and ready to receive natural gas. Regulatory approval, formally known as Leave to Open, has been received from the National Energy Board (NEB).
“This is another important milestone for the project,” said Brunswick Pipeline President, Robin McAdam. “Our testing and quality assurance programs show that the project team and our contractors have built a safe natural gas pipeline.”
To commission the 145 kilometre pipeline, air is purged from the line as natural gas is introduced into it. Odorized gas will enter the pipeline through the connection with the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline system near St. Stephen, New Brunswick. Local police, fire and emergency response officials will be notified of the purge and line filling procedure and schedule, as will residents within 1600 m (1 mile) of a purge site. Brunswick Pipeline and Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline crews, experienced in this type of operation, will be on site for the entire process. The public will be advised when the date for commissioning has been determined.
The Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) visitation program is well under way. As of Monday afternoon, February 2, 503addresses of approximately 1800 have been visited. A door hanger notice has been left at those residences where no one was home.
“Although we are knocking on all doors within 200 metres of the pipeline, all residents, businesses, industry or public facilities within 800 metres of the pipeline are invited to call for a personal visit at any time,” said Rob Belliveau, Brunswick Pipeline’s new General Manager. “Personally talking to the people closest to the pipeline is important to us. We want everyone in the EPZ to feel free to call us if they have any questions.”
