Brunswick Pipeline is ready to commission the 145 kilometre natural gas pipeline. To accomplish this, gas is allowed to enter the pipeline under low pressure. This pushes the air out of the line. This procedure will begin Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Purging the air out of the pipeline is expected to take approximately three days. Work will take place during daylight hours.
Odorized gas will enter the pipeline through the connection with the Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline system near St. Stephen, New Brunswick. The process involves the opening of valves to allow the controlled release of air. Also, some natural gas that has mixed with the air being pushed out of the line will be flared as it reaches selected valves. Air releases and flaring will occur at only three sites, two rural valves and at the Red Head meter station. Depending on a resident’s proximity to one of these three purge sites, they may experience audible noise and odor for a couple of hours on the day of the purge. Subsequent to completion of the purge process, additional gas, under pressure, will be allowed to entre the pipeline.
Information notices have been hand delivered to all addresses within 1600 metres (1 mile) of each purge site. Local police, fire and emergency response officials have also been notified of the purge and pack procedure and schedule. Brunswick Pipeline and Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline crews will be on site for the entire process.
